Unsun: Tinted Sunscreen for People of Colour

Addressing a growing consumer demand for beauty products for people of colour, Katonya Breaux, mother of US R&B artist Frank Ocean, has launched Unsun, the first naturally derived suncare line for people with darker skin complexions.

Breaux was inspired to create the product after frustrations with the white residue that regular sunscreen left on her skin, as well as eye irritation. The Unsun SPF 30 mineral-tinted sunscreen (which is creamy light brown) is the result of two years of formula experimentation.

The two main active ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which both have natural sun protection qualities and do not irritate the skin or penetrate the bloodstream. Other natural ingredients include shea butter, coconut oil, fruit extracts and beeswax – all of which boast natural skin moisturising capabilities.

While a number of brands are making efforts to develop more inclusive products for all skin types (see Women of Colour: Breaking Beauty Barriers), Unsun is among the first sun-protection products made specifically for darker skin tones. After receiving positive customer feedback, the company is currently developing an SPF body moisturiser and lip product.
