US Consumer Attitudes to Travel: 2017 Outlook

Americans' leisure/personal travel budgets are up 42% over 2016, from $3,572 to $5,063

Americans will increase travel spending in 2017, according to a new survey from Maryland-based hospitality company Choice Hotels International.

The Choice Hotels 2017 Travel Forecast was conducted by online survey platform Newlio among a nationally representative sample of 1070 US adults. Highlights include:

  • More Money, Same Time: Leisure/personal travel budgets are up 42% over 2016, from $3,572 to $5,063. However, due to busy schedules, Americans say they'll take three trips in 2017, in line with 2016. One in five listed 'my schedule was just too busy' as a reason for not travelling more over the past 12 months – a 144% increase over the previous year.  
  • Worth It: In exchange for an all-expenses-paid trip to their dream destination, more than half of Americans would give up their daily coffee or forego all holiday gifts, and nearly a quarter (23%) would miss a child's birthday or their best friend's wedding (24%).
  • Travel Matters: "Even though Americans are busier than ever, our survey reinforces that travel matters. People are willing to spend significantly more than last year to explore new places," said Patrick Pacious, president and chief operating officer of Choice Hotels International.
