US Design Influencers: National Design Awards 2016

Museum of the Future, Tellart

The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York has revealed the winners of the 2016 National Design Awards. The annual ceremony celebrates lasting achievements in US design across various industries including architecture, fashion and communications. We select the highlights. 

  • Interaction Design: At the forefront of integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence into public spaces, experiential design agency Tellart received the Interaction Design Award. Based in Rhode Island, Tellart was honoured for projects such as its ongoing Museum of the Future, which was shown as part of the last three World Government Summits in Dubai.

    The project consists of a series of highly immersive displays of interactive technologies that provide new ways of improving our quality of life, addressing areas like healthcare and city planning. Key interactive experiences included gaming systems that stored user data to show how world governments could use technology as a vital tool for improving everyday life for citizens.

  • Product Design: Known for creating almost instantly iconic designs such as the Square mobile card-reading payment system and Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, San Francisco-based industrial and brand design firm Ammunition received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Product Design. More recent work includes the Nuzzle GPS pet-tracker collar and accompanying app, which help owners better understand their animal’s health and wellbeing and advises courses of action.
