From Furniture to Houses: The IKEA Village

Inter Ikea Holding, owner of Swedish furniture retailer Ikea, has announced extraordinary plans for the development of Strand East: a 1,200-home, energy-efficient housing area next to the Olympic park in Stratford, East London.

As the company’s first British housing development – complete with a school, health surgery and nursery – it will be built around the area’s canals and have its own power plant. Inter Ikea’s non-retail arm, LandProp, also plans to build shops, restaurants, offices and a hotel within the currently derelict area.

The commercial aspects are set to open next spring, while Ikea is still seeking planning permission for housing.
