Medicine-Inspired Skincare Packaging by Nendo

Nendo for TCM

Japanese design studio Nendo's skincare packaging for Asian brand TCM+ takes influence from medical styling, highlighting the Chinese medicine inspiration behind TCM+'s range.

The pared-back packaging relies on a cross – the international symbol for healthcare – as its key motif, creating a design that is instantly recognisable as a product that promotes wellness. The graphic design overlaps around the rectangular bottles, enabling a variety of compositions for interesting in-store display options.

Based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, which involves selecting various combinations of herbs and minerals, the products are intended to be used together in different ways. Coloured squares indicate which items can be used with which, while muted tones on a white background ensure a clean, yet soft look. The neutral colour palette and minimal styling caters to the demand for no-fuss packaging that appeals to both men and women, as previously highlighted in Unisex Beauty.

Medical and laboratory-influenced styling is popular for both product and packaging, encouraging consumer trust in a brand, adding an element of authority, and enabling clear ingredient transparency – a trend first identified in Lab Look and seen playing out across other industries in Scientifically Styled Retail Spaces and New Food Styling.
