NYFW: Game On

New York Fashion Week has been showing its competitive streak this season, with numerous designers sending sports-inspired collections down the runway.

Victoria Beckham’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection had a distinctly more urban feel to it than her usual ladylike signature. The British singer-turned-designer's silhouette remained typically figure-hugging and sexy, but pieces such as silk shorts and parkas and details such as exposed buckles, zips and poppers give the collection an athletic edge.

Alexander Wang is no stranger to sporty influences and his S/S 12 collection once again returned to active pursuits for inspiration. Influenced by Nascar and BMX bikers, Wang showcased mesh bombers, sporty shorts and details including aertex-style shirts and across-the-body bags.

In addition, Derek Lam and VPL both notably incorporated sporty detailing into their collections. While Lam combined mesh-style knits and tees with his prim and preppy lady-like collection, VPL showed two-tone leggings and Lycra crop tops layered under silk active wear.

New York Fashion Week ends on September 15.
