MFW A/W 15-16: Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana A/W 15-16

Alongside their classic red rose motifs and lacework, Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana showcased naive appliqués and ornate, jewel-encrusted headphones that redefine ultra-luxe accessories at Milan Fashion Week.

‘La mamma’ (the mother) drove the brand’s Autumn/Winter 2015-16 direction, with pregnant or baby-carrying models walking down the catwalk – opening up a conversation about what Gabbana feels is the fashion industry’s detachment from family values, love, and other emotional human connections. For more on changing attitudes towards the family unit and its values, see our Macro Trend Modern Family.

Naive Appliqué: Whimsical lettering in intricate appliqué and beading based on drawings by Dolce’s nieces and nephews, added a childlike touch to dresses. Elsewhere, the brand’s iconic red rose is showcased in sequin-encrusted oversized appliqués and embroideries.

Bling Sound: Oversized headphones rendered in crystal and fur act as contemporary crowns and offer an update on last season’s ornate headbands. The headphones reaffirm the brand’s position as a leader in luxury in a time when the values of luxury are being redefined. Read more about this in our coverage of the Couture Spring/Summer 2015 season, where designers are repositioning themselves in the luxury market.
