Philips Unveils LED Carpets
Dutch electronics giant Philips has teamed up with Desso, the Dutch flooring firm, to create a light transmissive carpet that can display information or directions.
The carpet will integrate LED lights with its fibres to create a flexible display that can be customised for any situation. Potential uses for the carpet include guiding visitors around buildings and highlighting fire exits. The product is expected to reach the market in 2014.
"The technology takes advantage of people's tendency to be guided by the floor when moving through and interacting with space," Ed Huibers, marketing and sales director at Philips Lighting, said in a statement. "It brings information, direction, inspiration and safety via the carpet you walk on."
The LED carpet could also be used to add ambience to hotels, stores and homes. Its development follows last year's launch of Hue, an interactive lighting range from Philips that allows users to customise lighting options in their homes using wireless connectivity.
