Nissan Unveils BladeGlider EV
Japanese automaker Nissan has unveiled the BladeGlider, a new three-seater electric sports car with a novel trapezoid shape. Inspired by aeronautical gliders and the innovative DeltaWing racing car, its streamlined, aerodynamic form minimises drag, ensuring it uses far less energy than a standard sports car.
The vehicle is clad with lightweight carbon fibre, reducing the weight that the vehicle’s batteries must propel. Carbon fibre is fast becoming the material of choice in the electric vehicle sector. In September, German automaker BMW launched the first large-scale production of its new i-Car project, which seeks to build electric cars from carbon fibre instead of steel.
The BladeGlider was designed to maximise energy efficiency from the very start of the project, according to Francois Bancon, Nissan’s general manager of product strategy: “The goal was to revolutionise vehicle architecture to change the way we think about cars, and to see how zero emissions can help redefine our conception of vehicle basics.”
