Printable Furniture

Will the future see us printing our furniture at home?

Designer Greg Saul has worked with JST Erato Design UI Project in Tokyo to design a programme that could make printing furniture at home a reality.

The programme, Sketch Chair, is a 3D design programme that helps you design a chair. With a very simple user interface, you can add a high back or longer legs by simply clicking and dragging.

Once you’re finished designing the chair you can model it for how it responds to a person’s weight and then print a mini paper model before committing to a full-scale laser-cut version. The chair prints out on a flat sheet; the pieces are then slotted together to create a 3D chair.
