Martha Stewart’s American Made


Aiming to uncover the next generation of makers, the second annual American Made Market opened to the public over two days last week in New York’s Grand Central Station.

Launched by US media entrepreneur Martha Stewart, the 82 makers on show sat across multiple product categories and all contribute to America’s 28-million-strong small business communities. The market showcase featured selling stalls, tastings and demonstrations, plus an accompanying People’s Choice awards. Here are the highlights:

Stylus Favourite: Folk Fibers, by Savannah College of Art & Design graduate Maura Grace Ambrose, is a quilt company rooted in tradition. Every piece is entirely handmade in Austin, Texas, using dyes organically grown and harvested by Ambrose herself.

People’s Choice Winner: Illinois’ SGV Cuts began on e-commerce site Etsy, supplying 2D graphics for use in 3D paper craft. Since launching in 2009, the company has evolved into a multi-media resource for paper-cutting enthusiasts.

Technology Finalist: Making the most of advances in textile digital printing, Modern Yardage prints exclusive designs on demand in Utah. Online and made-to-order only, it can trial new designs or designers on a weekly or even daily basis.

Design Finalist: Ohio-based illustrative stationery brand Grey Cardigan, by Brian Andrew Jasinski, is a whimsical collection influenced by retro fashions.
