Beauty: Glossy Eyes Light Up NYFW

Clockwise L-R: 3ina's The Glossy Eye, Romee Strijd at Public School NYC S/S 18, Chromat S/S 18, Libertine S/S 18 by Katie Jane Hughes

Grunge-glam lacquered eyelids sprinkled with glitter have emerged as one of the key beauty takeaways from New York Fashion Week S/S 18.

As explored in Instagangs: Make-Up Experimentalists, this irreverent new trend for high-gloss texture and imperfect application is filtering through to the catwalks, where multi-hued metallic make-up created lustrous shine.

British-born make-up artist Katie Jane Hughes created a glistening black onyx, silver and gold glitter smoky eye at Libertine using products by Korean brand Too Cool for School, while New York-based make-up artist Fatima Thomas’s glossy bronze and fluoro look for Chromat used products by Mac.

Rihanna launched her long-awaited Fenty Beauty line during fashion week, showcasing it at her Fenty x Puma catwalk show. Each model wore a bespoke mix of golden-toned cream and powder highlighters on their eyelids and cheekbones for a modern, polished look. Finally, at Public School NYC, US make-up artist Grace Lee’s “layered metallic grey glossy eyes” were created by blending Maybelline’s pewter eyeshadow with Shine Shot Lip Gloss.

Although this look is deliberately imperfect and encourages experimentation, some consumers would shy away from using traditional lip products on their eyes. In response, UK beauty brand 3ina has shrewdly tapped the ‘see-it-want-it-now’ attitude of today’s beauty consumer and launched The Eye Gloss in an easy-to-use pen applicator form. The lightweight, non-sticky formula creates a subtle, dewy shine and is available in peach, pink, mauve and clear.
