Ambiente: New Glass Shapes for Pale Ales

German glass manufacturer Spieglau has responded to the popularity of craft beers in the US by working with breweries Sierra Nevada (California) and Dogfish Head (Delaware) to create a specialist glass designed to improve the flavour and enjoyment of Indian Pale Ales (IPA).

The 19-ounce goblet-style glass features a narrowed ridged base that is designed to enhance the beer’s flavour, by increasing the aroma as the drink flows over the ridges and into the large balloon-shaped opening. Although marketed for IPAs, the glass, Spieglau says, would also be suitable for other aromatic beers. The glasses demonstrate the market potential for specialist table or glassware for particular food or drink.

Spotted by Stylus at German homeware tradeshow Ambiente last week, unbranded versions of the glasses will go on sale in May 2013. Branded versions are currently available online from Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada. Look out for more coverage of Ambiente, coming soon on Stylus.
