Solar Decathlon

The Solar Decathlon competition, sponsored by the US Department of Energy, challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive.

The competition parameters invite extreme engineering, architecture, interiors and materials innovation by rewarding teams that blend affordability and consumer appeal with maximum efficiency.

The majority of teams competing are from US universities, with international teams from Canada, Belgium, and China competing in the Solar Decathlon for the first time this year. The event takes place in West Potomac Park, Washington D.C. from September 23 to October 2 2011.
