Yotel’s Micro Hotel Room of the Future


Facial-scanning entry systems will replace traditional keys, intuitive AI room service will predict food preferences, and all toiletries will be plastic free in the capsule hotel room of the future. This is according to a survey of 2,000 UK travellers and a roster of expert predictions from UK hotel chain Yotel.

The survey also found that 73% of those asked felt the bed is the most important aspect to get right about a room, followed by the bathroom. Likewise, in compact city-centre rooms, 72% agreed they would be happy for the bed to retract into the ceiling or wall to save space and for the mattress to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor guest health.

Meanwhile, 72% would like an in-room interactive mirror that would help them try on virtual outfits, and 74% would like a personalised virtual concierge on-hand during their stay.

Yotel’s chief executive Hubert Viriot said: “Even with all the talk of smart features, interactive technology and augmented reality [AR], it’s not gimmicks that travellers of tomorrow expect to see. Equally, demand for real estate is going to mean building closer together, limiting the light into a room, which makes windows a primary feature – whether it’s letting light in or acting as an interactive digital display. Success in the future will depend on efficient design and non-invasive technology that augments the guest experience.”
