Opening Ceremony x Spring Breakers

After a pre-release screening at the South by Southwest (SXSW) film and technology festival last Monday in Austin, Texas, new movie Spring Breakers has already inspired an Opening Ceremony capsule collection that will launch on March 22 in the US.

The cult American designer boutique is to produce an apparel line inspired by the much-hyped Florida-based movie penned and directed by Harmony Korine, who was responsible for writing the screenplay for the cult 90s flick, Kids. The film features three of Hollywood’s current tween icons, namely Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens. However, despite the title, Spring Breakers isn’t your usual high-school party movie, with subject matter including crime, sex, drugs and violence, amounting to something of a bold career transition for the former Disney starlets. James Franco’s performance has also impressed the critics.

The Spring Breakers’ wardrobe of neon bikinis, mesh tank tops, tiny sweat pant shorts and beach towels have inspired the Opening Ceremony collection, which has been created in conjunction with the film’s costumer designer, Heidi Bivens. Drawing on the girls-gone-wild theme and the bad-taste aesthetic, the pieces look set to prove youth-market favourites, just like the movie itself.
