Barcelona’s Building of the Year
Barcelona’s Media-ICT (Information and Communication Technology) building – as featured in Stylus report: Fabricate 2011 – has been named World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2011.
The Media-ICT building is a public space used for offices, civic areas, exhibitions, and events. Designed by Spanish architects Cloud 9, its revolutionary cushiony facade is designed to regulate the building’s internal temperature, while energy-efficient interior features further boost its super-eco credentials.
Key to its success is an exterior covered in energy-efficient inflatable ETFE (a fluorine-based plastic) pads, which open in winter to absorb solar energy, and close in summer to increase shade. With more than 7,000 sq m of space underground, the structure is also minimally intrusive on the surrounding architecture.
The World Architecture Festival 2011 has just concluded in Barcelona. For more on urban buildings utilising underground space, keep an eye out for the report Subterranean Spaces: City-scapes of the Future, coming soon.
