PlaySquare TV: Interactive Children’s Television

Using touchscreen technology, US “touchable television network” PlaySquare TV is building an interactive digital environment for young children aged between four and six. Kids can interact with animated episodes through touch, allowing them to become “a part of the stories they love”, while also stimulating their imagination and strengthening their early learning skills.

Currently available on the iPad, PlaySquare TV requires consistent participation from child viewers in order to help progress an episode’s storyline, using touch to turn a “passive viewing experience into an active adventure”. While themes vary per episode, most shows challenge children with letter recognition and word-building games.

These interactive and educational games have gained a following among parents who want to steer their kids away from the repetitious patterns common in video games. Engagement and mental stimulation are key to children’s development, and interactive entertainment initiatives such as this make great use of tablet touch-screen technology.
