Award-Winning Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Extra

A luxury lemon coconut milk ice cream by UK ice cream manufacturer Bessant & Drury has been awarded Best Free From food product at the 2013 Free From Food Awards in London, organised by UK based online magazine Foods Matter.

The dairy-free frozen dessert is made from coconut milk, renowned for its nutritional benefits and rich texture, and contains less than half the fat of a dairy ice cream. It is also gluten and soya free and suitable for those on a vegan diet. The products are currently stocked in UK supermarkets Tesco and Waitrose and in independent retailers across the UK.

“There has been a phenomenal number of new products entering the market in the last few years,” said Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, director of the Free From Food Awards. “Even better, this year many of the products that were free of multiple allergens (such as the winning lemon 'ice cream') tasted and looked not only as good, but better than many conventional products.'

Moving on from the saturated coconut water market (see Lunch! and Food & Drink Expo), brands are exploring coconut’s potential as a milk replacement product. Yoghurts, ice cream and milk chocolate have all been given coconut milk makeovers as highlighted in our coverage of The Natural Food Show.

It is estimated that globally between 220 and 250 million people suffer from food allergies, according to international federation the World Allergy Organisation. Haagen-Dazs Ice Moon Haagen-Dazs Ice Moon Haagen-Dazs Ice Moon London-based design studio Doshi Levien – founded by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien – has collaborated with US ice-cream manufacturer Haagen-Dazs to create experimental ice-cream cakes called Ice Moons.

Inspired by cinematic moon voyages, the Ice Moons are pitted with smooth craters. The designers say: “Our concept is almost spherical, so the ice cream has to be moulded in two separate parts and then put together, concealing the join.”

The White Moon boasts a pistachio biscuit base, layers of macadamia ice cream, meringue and a coating of raspberry ice cream. For more examples of designers getting creative with edibles, see the Events report London Design Festival: Food and the Vision report Ice Cream Dream.

Targeting early morning commuters, the brand installed coffee aroma atomisers in the city’s buses, which release a java-charged scent when the Dunkin’ Donuts jingle is played on the vehicle’s radio, creating a subtle link between coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts. The clever campaign worked – the brand reported a 29% increase in coffee sales in Seoul.

Scent is becoming the marketer’s tool of choice when it comes to engaging the visually jaded consumer. For more scented initiatives, see the Vision report Directions In Scent.
