A luxury lemon coconut milk ice cream by UK ice cream manufacturer Bessant & Drury has been awarded Best Free From food product at the 2013 Free From Food Awards in London, organised by UK based online magazine Foods Matter.
The dairy-free frozen dessert is made from coconut milk, renowned for its nutritional benefits and rich texture, and contains less than half the fat of a dairy ice cream. It is also gluten and soya free and suitable for those on a vegan diet. The products are currently stocked in UK supermarkets Tesco and Waitrose and in independent retailers across the UK.
“There has been a phenomenal number of new products entering the market in the last few years,” said Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, director of the Free From Food Awards. “Even better, this year many of the products that were free of multiple allergens (such as the winning lemon 'ice cream') tasted and looked not only as good, but better than many conventional products.'
Moving on from the saturated coconut water market (see Lunch! and Food & Drink Expo), brands are exploring coconut’s potential as a milk replacement product. Yoghurts, ice cream and milk chocolate have all been given coconut milk makeovers as highlighted in our coverage of The Natural Food Show.
It is estimated that globally between 220 and 250 million people suffer from food allergies, according to international federation the World Allergy Organisation.
