Fashion Looks to the Zodiac

Extra

Astronomy and star signs are proving key points of inspiration for the fashion and beauty industries at the moment, with numerous designers and brands offering zodiac-inspired product.

The Stylus team discovered UK bag designer Anya Hindmarch’s new site What Planet Are You On yesterday, which asks you to type in your name and birthday before delivering “universal truths, astro-facts and space oddities”. The subtly branded site ties in with the space theme of Hindmarch’s debut catwalk show at London Fashion Week this season, and serves as a fun talking point that importantly doesn’t directly try to sell product.

Elsewhere, Italian label Valentino showed star-sign-themed jewellery as part of its Spring/Summer 2014 show, while US nail brand Black Cat Lacquer has produced a Zodiac range of nail polishes with a different shimmering shade for each star sign, all priced at an affordable $9.

This recent starry inspiration is subtle and chic, rather than a regression to the cosmic prints seen several years ago and championed by Scottish designer Christopher Kane for Resort 2011. See New Frontiers in our industry trend Fashion in Flux for more on the current prominence of intergalactic inspiration.
