Cryoscope: A Tactile Temperature Gauge

American artist and designer Robb Goddshaw has invented a tactile temperature gauge called the Cryoscope that allows the user to feel the temperature rather than read it. The aluminium shell heats or cools accordingly, allowing the user to feel the temperature rather than having to understand and imagine academic concepts such as Fahrenheit or degrees with regard to the weather.

The device has two basic modes. The first, thermal time shift, matches the device’s temperature to any future temperature around the world, allowing users to plan their clothes or see how hot a holiday destination might be. The second is thermal space shift, which replicates the current temperature of any place in the world.

Due to metal affecting skin more easily than air, the Cryoscope is able to represent temperatures that are below freezing, despite only having a range of 0 to 42 degrees Celsius. The Cryoscope is currently on show at Smart Home: Green + Wired at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago until January 2013.
