Online payment service PayPal has launched PayPal Here – a triangular mobile payment device to rival Twitter founder Jack Dorsey’s Square.
Designed by Swiss product designer Yves Behar, the device uses a simple dongle attachment and a merchant app – allowing iPhone and Android smartphones to swipe credit cards and track receipts. The app also allows merchants to take pictures of cheques and cards to process payments even without the attachment.
The aim is to eventually make PayPal a fully functioning digital wallet. The app currently includes a ‘local’ button, which lets consumers use the device to pay at merchants that accept PayPal. US-based home improvement store Home Depot has already signed up, and PayPal will be announcing other major retail partners as well as international availability.
