Starbucks Verismo: First Single-Cup Coffee Maker

Global coffee giant Starbucks is bringing its iconic brew into the home with plans to manufacture and sell its first single-cup coffee machine.

The Verismo system will enable coffee lovers to conveniently brew lattes and espresso drinks via single-cup technology. The espresso and milk pods are being developed in partnership with German food and condiments company Krueger GmbH & Co. KG.

The Seattle-based coffee retailer had already entered the single-serve market with its K-Cup coffee packs and Starbucks Via instant coffee, but is now targeting the more sophisticated coffee aficionados.

‘The premium single-cup segment is the fastest-growing business within the global coffee industry,” said Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz in conversation with journalist Alice Chan via PSFK. “We have long believed that the biggest prize within the segment is a high-pressure system that would give us the opportunity to deliver Starbucks-quality espresso beverages at home and at work for customers who desire the Starbucks espresso experience outside of our stores.”

The Verismo system will be available online and in select Starbucks stores in late 2012.
