Kinder Aggugini Designs National Ballet Costumes

Italian designer Kinder Aggugini is to team up with the English National Ballet to redesign costumes for its long-established production, The Rite of Spring, choreographed by the late Kenneth MacMillan.

London-based Aggugini created a one-off tutu for an English National Ballet summer fundraiser in July 2011. He was later approached by the company’s artistic director, Wayne Eagling, to redesign The Rite of Spring costumes for the Beyond Ballet Russes season at the London Coliseum, in March 2012.

Aggugini met with both Eagling and MacMillan’s widow, Lady MacMillan, to discuss design ideas for the new costumes. All three parties were keen to evolve the aesthetic of the ballet while preserving the revered British choreographer’s vision. Aggugini joins the likes of Mary Katrantzou, Rodarte and Yves Saint Laurent – all of whom have created costumes for the performing arts over the past year.
