Intuitive Lighting: New Designs

In our Industry Trend Design Democracy: Integrate, we highlight the rise of intuitive designs with embedded technology – particularly products requiring gestural or physical movements instead of multiple switches. We’ve seen this trend develop, particularly in lighting. Here are three of our favourite examples:

Switch Light by Universal Program: This neat, disc-shaped light is turned on by simply flipping it over. Designed by Toronto-based studio Universal Program, it requires neither batteries nor mains power – the ‘off’ side of the lamp features a solar panel to power it up when not in use.

Ascent Lamp by Daniel Rybakken: Created by the Norwegian designer for Italian brand Luceplan, the minimal silhouette of this elegant table lamp hides an ingenious design. Moving the shade up or down the stand alters the intensity of the light – the higher the shade, the brighter the glow. When pulled down completely, the lamp turns off.

Flow Light by Mark Brand: Previously highlighted in our Design Academy Eindhoven report, this clever task light doesn’t have an on/off switch. Instead, the light acts like liquid. To turn the light off, simply tip up the cylinder, allowing the light to drain away.
