Ghostrunner: Race Yourself

Ghostrunner is an interactive training tool for runners and endurance athletes. Created by US tech start-up On the Go Platforms (OTG Platforms), Ghostrunner works with Google Glass to challenge athletes with real-time analytics and performance ‘ghosts’.

The app allows users to save previously timed runs to compete against during future training sessions. If the runner falls behind a previous time, a ghost will appear in front of the runner, moving at the faster pace. Users can also choose to compete with other runners’ times. In addition, Ghostrunner will also display a runner’s key stats – such as heart rate, speed and location – during a training session.

Although optimised for use with augmented reality eyewear such as Google Glass, Ghostrunner can also be used as a simple running app, communicating information about the user’s run via headphones.

The potential for this type of technology to bring peer-to-peer connection into single-person sports such as running, cycling or skiing is huge. The ability to visually compete with yourself or others in real time, and respond to those challenges, taps into the motivational power of games that is transforming sectors such as health and education.
