Dusit International to Accept UnionPay
Thai hospitality group Dusit International has signed an agreement to introduce Chinese credit card payment system UnionPay at its international hotels and resorts.
UnionPay allows payment with Chinese credit cards, which are not compatible with Western chip-and-pin terminals.
London luxury hotel The Ritz saw the number of Chinese guests increase by 17% and spending by Chinese guests rise by 25% after introducing UnionPay in 2011.
The service is Dusit’s latest strategy to accommodate the needs of Chinese guests. It has already introduced Mandarin-speaking staff, Chinese-language television channels, specially designed meals and teas, newspapers and shopping outlets at many of its properties, as well as opening sales offices in China and Hong Kong.
The number of Chinese visitors to Dusit International properties rose by 70% in 2012 compared to the same period the previous year, with Bangkok, Phuket and Dubai proving to be the most popular destinations. The company plans to open two new properties in China’s emerging beach destination, Hainan in 2013.
