Christian Lacroix x Swarovski for La Source

French fashion designer Christian Lacroix has partnered with Austrian brand Swarovski to create crystal-adorned costumes for the Opéra National de Paris for its autumn ballet, La Source.

The 19th-century ballet, choreographed by Jean-Guillaume Bart, focuses on the relationship between man and nature, combining romanticism and Orientalism against the fantastical backdrop of Persia.

Using two million crystals, Lacroix has blended classical design and ethnic influences to craft an opulent range of tiaras, saris and fairy tutus for the cast of elves, nymphs, khans and odalisques. "We opted for timelessness,” he explains. “I worked on this production keeping in mind the 'Ecole de Paris' era – in my opinion, one of the high points of French taste – while transferring it to the current millennium, of course."

La Source runs at the Opéra National de Paris from 22 October to 12 November 2011.
