Foursquare Holiday Mapping

Social media company Foursquare has created an infographic time-lapse map tracking US travel in the winter period last year, from Halloween to Christmas.

The blue arcs portray air travel, the red lines represent train journeys, and the white represents cars on highways. It is not an entirely accurate picture, as it only represents those who utilise the social media site and app and ‘check in’. However, it does suggest that train travel was more popular than air travel.

At this year’s travel trade show, World Travel Market, held in London this November, several delegates noted that in the West, train travel will begin to overtake budget air travel, while airline growth will be mostly limited to the emerging markets, including the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and SLIMMA (Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico and Argentina).
