Ace Hotel Opens Culturally Attuned London Outpost


With five properties across the US, the Ace Hotel reached UK shores this month with the opening of an east-London branch in Shoreditch – its first in Europe. Known for its alternative creative scene, street market and thriving nightlife, the district is a natural fit for the hipster brand, which regularly hosts fashion, music and art events at its US outposts in cities including New York and LA.

Despite its American roots, the venture strongly reflects its location in the UK, with founder Alex Calderwood enlisting a raft of top London designers to transform the blank canvas of the former Crowne Plaza business hotel. Pablo Flack and David Waddington – pioneers of London’s pop-up dining scene and the duo behind Kings Cross petrol-station-turned-café Shrimpy’s – have created the restaurant, bar and event space, while the façade and interiors were overhauled by Universal Design Studio. The local practice was founded by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby – creators of last summer’s golden perforated Olympic torch.

Similarly, on a musical note, rooms include radios and turntables from UK brands Revo and Rega, allowing guests to sample Ace’s curated in-house radio station and supplied selection of vinyl records. Guests will also find outposts of other London businesses on-site, including local florist That Flower Shop
