Food Brands Embrace 3D Printing

3D-printed sugar from 3D Sytems at CES

Italian food brand Barilla has paired up with Dutch company TNO (which specialises in applied scientific research) to develop customised pasta. According to reports, Barilla is aiming to produce dough cartridges that customers can insert into 3D printers to create bespoke pasta designs.

Kjeld van Bommel, TNO project leader, told Dutch newspaper Trouw that one possible outcome would enable restaurant-goers to create customised pasta shapes by supplying their designs on a USB stick. “Suppose it’s your 25th wedding anniversary,” he explained. “You go out for dinner and surprise your wife with pasta in the shape of a rose.”

Meanwhile, US chocolate giant Hershey has signed a multi-year development deal with American firm 3D Systems to explore ways of applying 3D-printing techniques to food production.

3D Systems unveiled two 3D food printers at the International Consumer Electronics Show this month in Las Vegas. The ChefJet (which prints in single colour) and the ChefJet Pro (which prints in full colour) process sugar and chocolate.
