Barbie’s Dream House


The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has launched a competition for its members to design a Dream House for toy company Mattel’s newest member "I Can Be…" range - an Architect Barbie doll.

The Architect Barbie Dream House Design Competition invites architects to design a home, which meets Architect Barbie’s guidelines. Her key guidelines include; sustainable design principles, an office space, open plan living and dining areas and, of course, room for five pets including her giraffe. The somewhat unusual brief also asks AIA members to encapsulate the personality and style of a young, female architect in their designs.

With the production of the new doll celebrating the 125th anniversary of women’s acceptance into the profession both Mattel and AIA hope that the latest model will re-route previous Barbie stereotypes and encourage more girls to pursue a career in architecture,
