Walmart’s Shopycat Facebook App

Acknowledging that the online shopping experience is becoming increasingly tailored to individual consumers, US retail giant Walmart has launched Shopycat. The smart gift-giving app analyses shared information on social networking site Facebook to suggest ideal Christmas presents for friends and family.

By gathering activity and information from users’ Facebook accounts (with their permission), Shopycat creates a personalised gift profile, where a list of relevant Walmart products is compiled and sent to online friends. Transactions aren’t handled via the app. Instead, users are directed to the checkout page of Walmart’s main e-commerce site.

The app echoes elements of e-tailer Amazon’s gift compilation app, but is potentially more exciting due to the fact it doesn’t require the gift recipient to lift a finger themselves. Plus the gifts will be a complete surprise. According to the retailer, the app will continue after the holidays for gift-giving occasions all year round.

Walmart has also announced another holiday app to boost sales, where iPhone users can speak, scan, or type in a specific item. The app will then determine the price, nearest store location, and stock availability.
