Topshop’s ‘Key to Freedom’ Scarves


The latest charitable initiative from British high-street store Topshop supports the Key to Freedom project, which works towards supporting vulnerable young women in West Bengal by supplying them with new skills and safe houses.

The Arcadia Group-owned store worked with a team of Bengali girls to create four silk scarves featuring traditional Indian-style colourful prints, priced at £32 ($49) each. The team of women behind making the items receive guaranteed payment for their work, while the remaining profit from the sale of the scarves is donated to the Women’s Interlink Foundation (WIF) – the charitable organisation behind the Key to Freedom project – to support many more women in their quest for a new life.

Key to Freedom aims to provide women recovering from the likes of domestic abuse or sex trafficking with valuable skills such as sewing, dyeing and textile making, so they can eventually become financially independent. A spokesperson said that working as a team to create the Topshop scarves was also beneficial for the women’s wellbeing, boosting their confidence, instilling hope for the future, and providing a support network of women who have been through similar ordeals.

The scarves launched on July 18 in three Topshop branches in London (Oxford Circus, White City and Brompton Road), as well as Topshop.com online.
