One Prize

New York City Planning Commission chair Amanda Burden has said: “Water is so important [to the city] that we need to think of it as the sixth borough.” Inspired by this message, the One Prize design competition challenges designers to envision the “Sixth Borough of New York City”. The aim is to create an urban clean technology corridor, and establish the city as “the ultimate green capital of the world”.
The prize calls for proposals in two categories. The first is to design green transport hubs connecting NYC’s five existing boroughs, incorporating electric passenger ferries, car-sharing and shuttle buses. The second is to design or repurpose existing facilities along the shore of the boroughs, as well as on the water, for the clean technology world expo E3NYC, held in the city in 2014.
Entrants will be competing for $10,000 (£6,476) cash prizes and the chance to shape the future landscape of NYC. The award ceremony will take place on January 18 2012, before a year-long travelling exhibition.
One Prize is organised by cross discipline design and science partnerships Planetary ONE and TerreformONE. Read more about the work of Mitchell Joachim co-founder of Planetary ONE and Terreform ONE in Fungi in the Biological Age.
