In-Store Foot Scans at The Left Shoe Company, LA


UK custom shoe brand The Left Shoe Company has opened its first US store, based in LA, with a design concept that marries both the classic styling of the brand with some high-tech new technology.

Central to the concept is a foot-scanning device: a small platform that uses a rotating camera to construct a 3D image of a client’s foot, from which the bespoke shoes are crafted. To use the device, shoppers slip on a pair of special tech-compatible socks outfitted with gridlines that enable the scanner’s software to capture key data points (measurements) around the foot. A camera positioned on the outer edge of the scanner captures additional images to ensure accuracy. The entire process takes approximately 10 minutes.

To accommodate clients who are unable to visit the store in person, the LA store is also equipped with a portable foot scanner that sales staff can take out to clients.

Acting as a kind of digital concierge, each client’s measurements are saved into the company database where Left Shoe Company’s salespeople evaluate the collected data, taking into account variances in foot size, narrowness and width before helping guests customise a shoe.

Clients can choose their shoes’ colour and material and even add an inscription. Each pair of shoes is then handcrafted in Europe and shipped to clients in approximately six weeks. Prices start at $395.
