DLD 11: VC Investment in China’s Media Channels

The Digital Life Design (DLD) 2011 in Munich yesterday saw venture capitalist Jim Breyer of Accel Partners tip the audience at The Big Picture panel discussion on where to invest for 2020.

Named in 2010 as one of Fortune magazine’s 10 smartest people in technology, and the smartest investor in technology, Breyer said: “In 2000 all our partners were based in Palo Alto. Today we have twice as many based in Beijing. If you take a 10 year view of where American capital will be in the media, entertainment and internet, I believe well over 75% of the market capital by 2020 will be based overseas.”

Speaking specifically on the growth of partnerships in China, Breyer said: “From 2003/4 we invested over $1.5 billion in Chinese internet companies, and will further invest more than $2 to $3 billion in the next few years in Chinese mobile, internet and entertainment companies.”
