Dutch Design Week 2014 Preview: Design Duo Rugs

Dutch Landscapes Rug Collection

During Dutch Design Week (October 18-26 2014), Netherlands-based carpet company ICE International will be launching Dutch Landscape – a collection of eight handmade rugs created in collaboration with four Dutch design duos.

  • Claire Vos's gradient striped design features differing levels of tufting to create a lenticular effect that alters the appearance of the pattern's colours depending on the viewer's perspective. For more on optical pattern and illusory design, see Trick of the Eye: Colour & Illusion.
  • Piet Hein Eek has played with the nature of a rug in his design, which is intended to sit over a solid block and form both flooring and seating within a public space. The gridded design features circles of diminishing sizes in neutral tones on a black background.
  • In contrast to these graphic renditions, Joost van Bleiswijk has taken an illustrative approach with a simple design that replicates a charcoal sketch. Tonal variation is impressively created through hand-tufting that retains the human touch of the drawn motif.

Look out for more coverage from Dutch Design Week, coming soon to Stylus. Meanwhile, for more recent textiles and home accessories launches, see our coverage from London Design Festival, Maison & Objet, and Milan Design Week from earlier this year.
